CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Crews were battling a 2-alarm fire at historic school building near South End Monday afternoon.
According to the Charlotte Fire Department, firefighters responded around 2:30 p.m. to the former Wilmore School in the 400 block of West Boulevard. Smoke was reportedly showing from the unoccupied building, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed.
The fire was controlled in 25 minutes by 60 firefighters. No evacuations were needed, and injuries were reported.
The building was formerly used as a staff development center, but a rezoning was approved last year for a mixed-use development that planned on preserving the 100-year-old structure. CMS still owns the property.
The Charlotte Investigation Task Force is investigating the fire.
